Extrapool is a venue and art space based in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, operating in three fields: sound, art and print.
Extrapool shows a diversity in sound art, performance art, short exhibitions and high quality printed matter. Concerts, workshops, screenings and book presentations are organized in Extrapool’s venue space on a regular base.
Extrapool is a great space for discovery. It shows work of upcoming artists and artists who work with multiple disciplines in art and music. At Extrapool, you never know what to expect; it’s all about the experiment. The events of Extrapool are characterized by their playful context in a convertible venue space. Informal and intimate on one hand, distinctive and artistic on the other.
History
Extrapool was founded in 1991 but Extrapool’s stencilprint workspace Knust has been around since the mid 80’s.
Knust started out as a workshop with analog machines by Gestetner and Roneo, which were easy to get your hands on back in the day, because the majority of offices and copy shops switched over to modern copy machines. Knust was interested in these analogue machines because of practical reasons (they could print reasonably fast, cheap and with several colors, and needed no cleaning) but mainly because of the beautiful way the greasy, colored ink would soak into the rough paper.
Before using these machines, Knust was already making a few offset and silkscreen books. After moving to Tweede Walstraat in 1991, Extrapool was born. From that moment on there would be enough space to create a venue/presentation room and even a sound studio in the basement. Nowadays Extrapool has a professional team of curators that work passionately on creating the most playful and surprising events.
Guestrooms
Extrapool has two guest rooms, each with its own kitchenette and 2 single beds (expandable to 3 or 4) with shared facilities such as a shower and toilet.
Guests who are performing in Extrapool or are working on a book residency or art project can stay in the STEE*. In consultation, other cultural institutions and individual artists in and outside Nijmegen can also use the STEE for short or slightly longer periods. Interested? *The beds were designed and made by Jan Vos and Ditte Havinga and are inspired by the old Dutch box bed.
Venue rental
In addition to its regular programme, Extrapool offers third parties (small cultural, artistic projects) the opportunity to use the hall and other facilities.
The Extrapool venue space is around 60 to 70 square meters and is cosy and full character. A professional sound and lighting system are present and available for rental.
Prices:
Rental of the hall per half day (4 hours): € 125.00*. This includes mood lighting, chairs and tables and use of sound via 2 monitors.
Rental of additional facilities:
Total rental PA/sound system room: €50.00*
Rental projector (including screen): €25.00*

Extrapool is always on the outlook for new volunteers! There are many different tasks which we could use your help with:
Tasks during an event
Sound: work as a sound technician for bands and artists
Cooking: cooking a vegetarian meal for artists and volunteers
Ticket booth: sell tickets at the entrance
Bar: pour in drinks at the bar
DJ: spin your favorite records in between the acts
Photo/film: shoot videos and take photo’s during an event
Cleaning: help leaving a clean and tidy venue after an event
General tasks
Wallpapering: every few weeks there will be a new Slimtarra wallpaper design to go up on one of Extrapool’s walls
Street team: spreading flyers in bars and shops in Nijmegen
Mail team: sending out flyers by mail
Photo/film editing: editing photos and videos for documentation
