Extrapool heet iedereen een warm welkom om samen de laatste wintermaanden door te komen tijdens ons programma Some fire to melt these icy icy new beginnings (postal edition). We luiden zusterlijk het nieuwe jaar in met de collectieven Text my Sister en Zusterhood, die we hebben gevraagd hun correspondentie-praktijk met ons te delen. Het resultaat? Twee weekenden gevuld met workshops, filmvertoningen, exposities en experimenteel nieuw werk.

Deze twee weken van residentie en presentaties vormen de tweede editie van Some fire to melt these icy icy new beginnings, een programma waarin Extrapool haar ruimte en middelen deelt met andere collectieven om samen te werken, kennis uit te wisselen en elkaar te inspireren. In deze ‘postal edition’ staat de kunst van het brieven schrijven en maken centraal, met een ereplek voor de envelop als drager van creativiteit, intimiteit, verzet en verbinding.

Text my Sister
Na een vruchtbare samenwerking bij SEA Foundation in Tilburg, startten twee kunstenaars en twee curatoren samen het collectief Text my Sister. De groep ontwikkelt verschillende manieren van collectieve kennisdeling met als basis hun schrijfpraktijk. Belangrijke thema’s in hun werk zijn decentralisatie, uitwisseling, vriendschap en collectiviteit. Zoals hun naam al prijsgeeft, is texting het medium waarmee binnen het collectief wordt gewerkt. Ze zullen in Extrapool het brieven schrijven omarmen en open schrijfsessies organiseren. 

Text my Sister bestaat uit Julia Fidder, curator en schrijver uit Eindhoven, Michaela Davidova, kunstenaar en curator uit Tilburg, Myriam Gras, kunstenaar en curator uit Helsinki and Xenia Tsompanidou, curator en producer uit Utrecht.

Zusterhood
Zusterhood is een groep van makers die elkaar elke 1,5 maand briefpakketten stuurt die inspireren, groeien en verbinden. Ze is er voor allerlei makers, zoals beeldend kunstenaars, illustratoren, filosofen, fotografen, theatermakers, grafisch vormgevers, designers en andere makers met liefde voor papier en kunst. Alle leden worden als zuster aangesproken, maar het collectief bestaat niet alleen uit vrouwen.

“Omdat je voor een brief zelf moet vertragen en de tijd moet nemen, kom je in een andere gemoedstoestand. Hierdoor deel en maak je andere dingen […]. Je kunper post een expositie versturen of een beeldend gesprek aangaan, naast het delen van aandachtigheid. Dát is Zusterhood.”

Zusterhood laat bij Extrapool voor het eerst de hoogtepunten zien uit hun uitvoerige en fraaie correspondenties.

Extrapool warmly welcomes everyone back into our space to get through the last winter months together. To start off the new year, we’ve invited collectives Text my Sister and Zusterhood to share their explorations with us and transform their writing into a program to invite you in. Two weekends filled with workshops, screenings, exhibitions and experimental new work. 

So gather round for our second installment of Some Fire to Melt These Icy Icy New Beginnings (postal edition), a program in which Extrapool shares its space and resources with other collectives in order to collaborate, exchange knowledge and inspire each other. 

This year is centered around the art of letter writing and making, honoring the envelope as a vessel for creativity, intimacy, resistance and connection. 

Text my Sister
Two artists and two curators started the collective Text my Sister after working together at SEA Foundation in Tilburg. The group develops different ways of collective knowledge-sharing based on their writing practice. Themes in their work are decentralization, exchange, friendship and collectivity. As their name reveals, texting is the medium used within the collective. The collective will embrace letter writing at Extrapool and host open writing sessions.

Zusterhood
Zusterhood is a group of makers who send each other letter packages every 1,5 months that inspire, grow and connect. She is there for all kinds of makers, such as visual artists, illustrators, philosophers, photographers, theater makers, graphic designers and other makers with a love of paper and art. All members are comfortable with being addressed as sister, but the collective does not consist only of women.

“Creating a letter requires you to slow down and take your time, you get into a different state of mind and share and make different things […]. You can send an exhibition in the mail or have a visual conversation in addition to being attentive. That is Zusterhood.”

Zusterhood will be showing highlights from their extensive and beautiful correspondences for the first time at Extrapool.
