“Wij mensen bestaan voor een groot deel uit water, zegt de wetenschap, maar voelen we dat ook? Tijdens de performance-lecture wil ik de luisteraar uitdagen een beetje weg te smelten en te verdampen. Door een combinatie van een waterige soundscape, gedichten en wetenschappelijke en persoonlijke anekdotes wil ik de grenzeloosheid van water en het menselijke lichaam benadrukken. Door de combinatie van geluid en wetenschappelijke en poëtische vertelling hoop ik naast waterige verhalen ook vloeibare emoties te delen.”

Carmen Molenaar is beeldend kunstenaar en bevraagt met haar werk de relatie met onze omgeving en hoe we samen kunnen leven met de natuur; met onze niet-menselijke buren. Bergen, rivieren en de bewegingen van de aarde spelen een grote rol in haar werk en ze ziet hen dan ook als partners tijdens het maken van haar werk. Carmen fotografeert, filmt en schrijft, maar werkt ook veel met natuurlijke materialen zoals rivierklei en lokale planten.

Thomas Jaspers
Thomas is een veelzijdige drummer, die in verschillende experimentele jazz/improvisatiegroepen speelt en in zijn solo werk het experiment op zoekt. Daarnaast voert hij als klimaatactivist actie tegen diepzeemijnbouw, onder andere met de grindcoreband “The Polymetallic Nodules”.

In Waterdicht zal Thomas een werk uitvoeren van de Turkse geluidskunstenaar Cevdet Erek. In ‘SSS – How to imitate the sound of the shore using two hands and a carpet’ horen we de zee vertolkt via een stuk tapijt.

Andreas Oskar Hirsch
Door de buizen van Extrapool hoor je dit weekend het audiowerk ‘ROW’ van Andreas Oskar Hirsch. ‘ROW’ bestaat uit een verzameling veldopnames die Andreas maakte voor het Oerol festival op het West-Friese eiland Terschelling.

Deze opname werd gemaakt aan boord van de ARAD, een reddingsboot van het Nederlandse Roeiteam Terschelling Recreatie tijdens een trainingsoefening op 25 april 2011. Het parcours liep van de haven van West-Terschelling de Waddenzee op en weer terug. We horen de meditatieve staat van de roeiers maar ook de commando’s van de stuurman. Die lijken op die van een funkzanger en zorgen ervoor dat de ploeg één lichaam wordt dat zich een weg baant door het water.

Andreas Oskar Hirsch maakt onder meer instrumenten en experimentele installaties bestaande uit beeld, geluid en text. Themas in zijn werk zijn mislukking en ideen rond schoonheid en perfectie. Zijn muziek geeft hij uit op het onafhankelijke label Makiphon.

“We humans consist largely of water, says science, but do we feel that? During the performance-lecture I want to challenge the listener to melt away and evaporate a little. Through a combination of a watery soundscape, poems and scientific and personal anecdotes I want to emphasize the boundlessness of water and the human body. Through the combination of sound and scientific and poetic storytelling I hope to share liquid emotions in addition to watery stories.”

Carmen Molenaar is a visual artist. With her work she questions the relationship with our environment and how we can live together with nature; with our non-human neighbors. Mountains, rivers and the movements of the earth play a major role in her work and she sees them as partners in the creation of her work. Carmen photographs, films and writes, but also works a lot with natural materials such as river clay and local flora.

Thomas Jaspers
Thomas is a versatile drummer, who plays in various experimental jazz/improvisation groups and seeks experimentation in his solo work. In addition, he campaigns as a climate activist against deep-sea mining, including with the grindcore band “The Polymetallic Nodules”.

In Waterproof, Thomas will perform a work by Turkish sound artist Cevdet Erek. In ‘SSS – How to imitate the sound of the shore using two hands and a carpet’ we hear the sea interpreted via a piece of carpet.

Andreas Oskar Hirsch
This weekend, you can hear the audio work ‘ROW’ by Andreas Oskar Hirsch through the Extrapool tubes. ‘ROW’ consists of a collection of field recordings that Andreas made for the Oerol festival on the West Frisian island of Terschelling.

This recording was made on board the ARAD, a lifeboat of the Dutch Rowing Team Terschelling Recreatie during a training exercise on 25 April 2011. The course ran from the harbour of West Terschelling to the Wadden Sea and back again. We hear the meditative state of the rowers but also the commands of the helmsman. These resemble those of a funk singer and ensure that the team becomes one body that makes its way through the water.

Andreas Oskar Hirsch makes instruments and experimental installations consisting of images, sound and text. Themes in his work are failure and ideas about beauty and perfection. He releases his music on the independent label Makiphon.
